Green Party spent over £1million on legal costs in 2025

According to the GPEW 2025 accounts submitted to the Electoral Commission, the party spent £1,030,118 on legal costs in 2025, which is almost four times as much as it spent in 2024. It is nearly one fifth of the party’s entire expenditure for 2025. Here is page 8 of the party’s Income and Expenditure Account for the year ended 31 December 2025:The story was picked up in The Telegraph on 22 August 2026, which highlighted two of the current court cases that are contributing to the party’s legal bills.

  • Firstly, Shahrar Ali, who previously won an unlawful discrimination case against GPEW, has been expelled and is suing again over this.
  • Secondly, Emma Bateman is suing the party for discrimination after having been expelled from the Green Party three times for expressing gender-critical beliefs.

Green Party to allow men back into women’s sports?

The Telegraph (Sabrina Miller on 11 July 2026) has reported that the Green Party will consider a motion to support “trans-centric and trans-inclusive sporting projects” and “work in government to undo the toxic environment around trans, intersex and gender-non-conforming people in sport”.

This contradicts the Supreme Court decision in April 2025, which defined sex under the Equality Act as biological sex only.

The Telegraph adds that Fiona McAnena, director of campaigns for Sex Matters, said: “The party says it will oppose ‘gender-based blanket bans’. In plain language, this means allowing men who claim to be women into the female category and denying fair sport to women and girls”.

Geraldine Coggins is Green candidate for Manchester Mayor

All eyes on the Greater Manchester Mayoral By-Election on 30 July 2026, now that Andy Burnham has left the mayoralty after being elected MP for Makerfield.

Geraldine Coggins, the Green Party councillor for Altrincham, is the Green candidate for Mayor. She has been likened to Mrs Goggins in Postman Pat. Both of them seem quite sensible characters and it is probable that neither is a trans activist.

Anthony Slaughter and women’s rights to single-sex spaces

‘Welsh greens to go it alone as they ditch identity politics on their way to the Senedd’ reports The Green Light Blog (19 April 2026). If you don’t have a BBC TV licence to watch BBC Wales ‘Your Voice’ in Llandudno on 15 April 2026, you can watch here as Plaid Werdd Leader Anthony Slaughter answers a question about women’s rights to single-sex spaces.

See also the long thread of comments on the post by Wales-Women’s Rights Network @WRNWales including criticism of Slaughter’s points about: women’s rights are a ‘culture war’, vulnerable groups, trans kids, all rights considered but men’s are more important, men with trans identities are less of a risk than other men, “research” supports his position, etc, etc.

Zack Polanski thinks women can have a penis

Here is Green Party leader Zack Polanski telling Piers Morgan (9 October 2025) that a woman can have a penis.

Polanski was ridiculed by many, for instance Cathy Devine.

For anyone not on X/Twitter, see www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/2119636/piers-morgan-clashes-zack-polanski-trans-row

During the interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Polanski also claimed to know more about this than the Supreme Court, which held in their landmark judgement of 16 April 2025 in For Women Scotland v Scottish Ministers that women and girls are defined by biological sex not gender identity.

Sian Berry criticises FiLiA not the Bash Back vandals

Early on Friday, 10 October 2025, just hours before the start of the FiLiA women’s rights conference there that day, a group called Bash Back vandalised the Brighton Centre, as reported by the BBC.

Later that day, Sian Berry, Green MP for Brighton, posted on X that

The choice of Brighton was clearly provocative from organisers and the problems caused predictable.

The X thread is worth reading in full. Berry continued:

I raised this with the Council, including the leader, months ago and offered my help to prevent all this. Very disappointing not to have had this taken up.

Respondents naturally posed questions and comments about what Berry’s ‘help’ would have been:

And what exactly did ‘your help’ look like? Your help to ban the conference? Your advice to continue to look away as men terrorise women – no worse, you continuing to smear the women as the problem?

You can’t ban people from Brighton, Sian.

Rather than issue a statement in support of the conference, Berry chose to post a message that it was ‘provocative’. She made no criticism of Bash Back.

Bash Back describes itself as a ‘trans-led direct action group combatting the rising tide of bigotry in the UK’. Its attack on FiLiA follows the one during the summer, when the group vandalised Wes Streeting’s constituency office in Ilford, as reported by The Telegraph on 1 August 2025.

It has published an ‘action guide’ doc at www.transbashback.com/actionguide.pdf. For the record, here are some pages from the action guide. It’s nice that they ‘do not condone causing physical harm to any human being’.

Ecology of Polanski’s Green Party

Zack Polanski was elected Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW) on 2 September, soundly beating joint-ticket rivals, Adrian Ramsay MP and Ellie Chowns MP. Mothin Ali and Rachel Millward were elected as joint deputy leaders.

A new  post at greensinexile.org.uk/ecology-of-polanski-green-party considers whether the party is straying from its traditional ecological foundation under its new leadership.

the SOC3

Keen observers of the Green Party’s governance may have noticed the unexplained absence of three members of the Standing Orders Committee (SOC) at their recent meeting on Saturday March 8th. All were referred to by the two remaining members of SOC (Ash Routh & Melanie Earp),  in the context of discussions that had taken place on the private Trello system, as though they were still members of the committee.  Which of course they are, having been elected by Conference. But it seems that they can no longer participate in committee business as  they have all been placed on temporary* emergency suspension (pending investigation) by the Green Party Regional Council (GPRC) -where Mel Earp is a co-Chair.

So who are these three people deemed by GPRC to present a danger to the Party?

Martha James is a long-standing member of the Green Party of England & Wales (GPEW) and until recently served as a co-Chair of GPRC.

Martin Hemingway has filled many roles over the years, recently as the national Election Returning Officer (ERO). He is currently the Convenor of SOC.

Sarah Bingham has acted as ERO for Special Interest Groups (SpIGs) and has a reputation for ensuring fair elections. She was elected to SOC for a third term at the Autumn Conference in 2024.

What did they do that was so dangerous?

We think it is that they made a majority ruling on SOC that allowed the North West region elections for their reps to GPRC to go ahead in Feb/March 2025.  It had been argued that when Mel Earp & Amanda Onwuemene were elected in Nov 2024 it was for a two year term and not just until the next scheduled elections. The ruling disagreed. The election took place and the results were that Amanda Onwuemene was re-elected but Mel Earp was not.

The complaints against the SOC3 apparently alleged that their ruling was politically motivated when in fact it was based on the words of the ERO who oversaw the Nov election, which made it clear that the roles on GPRC would only last until the next scheduled elections.

Why does it matter and what needs to happen?

SOC cannot function without the co-convenors, nor when inquorate, as it now is with three members suspended. SOC is the body that ensures other bodies act in line with the Constitution and oversees the business at Conference. It is arguably the most important of the Governance bodies and, without SOC, the accountability of our other governing bodies has been effectively neutralised.

We can only speculate as to any part Mel Earp may have played in this sorry saga but all responsible should feel ashamed. Three good people are temporarily unable to contribute and we call on the Green Party Executive (GPEx) and GPRC to rectify this situation immediately.

“Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.” – John Andrews

*Although emergency suspensions are supposed to be ‘temporary’ these sanctions imposed by GPRC often remain in place for excessively long periods. They are increasingly being viewed as a way for GPRC to silence their political opponents. See Suspended, Expelled, Resigned or Meet The Exiles for more information.
